Wehave made it to Siam Reap and Im really glad to get back to a little bit of civilisation! The city is beautiful and everything you need is right on your doorstep, i think you could probably loose days here!
When we going off of the bus, unfortunately we had an a**hole of a Tuk Tuk driver who stopped in the middle of know where and practically demanded that we book with him to see Angkor Temples, when we said that we didnt know what we were doing yet he got really angry and stated calling us crazy etc... and then put the price of the fare up. Polly was getting quite agitated by this so i calmly said to the guy, "look, your not listening to us...""No your not listening to me, blah blah blah"he shouted back....so again i calmly explained that we had just had a long bus journey, Polly had already seen the temples and so it was just me who wanted to go, BUT we didn't have any plans yet so we were going to sit down tonight and work them out...so for that reason we couldn't just book him to take us etc.... "well, how do i get your business then etc...you said you were going to see the temples"he said angrily, "No i explained, we have never once indicated that we were going to book you to take us to the temples, all we asked when we got into the Tuk Tuk, was that you take us to such and such hotel...so for that reason, we will only pay you the amount you originally said the fare would be and thats it, if you want to give me your business card so we can contact you when we have decided when we want to go then thats fine". "No, i have no business card, and im not just giving my number to strangers who wont call"after that i couldnt be bothered any more so i just said, Look, if thats how its going to work then we cant help you - im not prepared to sit here and be shouted at, expected to make an agreement with you - Please take us to the Guest house or we will get out of the Tuk Tuk now and wait for another one and you will get nothing - then he started to drive again muttering under his breath and you could tell he was so angry just from sitting behind him, seeing his body language and because he drove so fast!!! I gave him his money when we stopped, which he snatched out of my hand with no word of thanks and then drove off - so Polly and i had a good old swearing fit to ourselves, said every word under the sun and then our anger was out and we were all good to go!
All was good when we had booked into our room and headed out for a stiff drink, which happened to be Mojitos in a bar called Viva, from then we went to another bar/restaurant where we had our first Sunday roast in months - oh my god it was amazing...Now we have been sharing all of our meals so far as although the portions are about the same size as you get at home, our stomachs have shrunk some what (as im sure you can see from my photos) (cough, cough) but the thought of having to share a roast dinner almost killed us so we had one each and as amazing as it was...man did it kill me...my stomach was not good after that!
So...going to bed with a killer stomach ache, in the boiling heat was not working so we had to up grade our room and turn on the aircon which helped a lot and i had just drifted off to sleep when Polly shouts out "Theres a f**king mouse in our room and its just run behind your bed"so i bolt up right, wide awake now and we start searching for this mouse which obviously we didnt find but naively we convinced ourselves it was just a Gecko cos they made some crazy noises let me tell you - we had one in our room in Ratanakiri and it was so loud and persistant that it drove us insane - Anyway i got off to sleep and at about 4.15am the bloody mouse started squeking agian - luckily i had to get up anyway as i was off to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat and see some of the temples at 5am so i just got up and showered - and left Polly with the mouse! hee hee!
The temples....I almost didnt go and see, but i knew that i had to really - you cant come to Cambodia without seeing them, but I had seen some in Vietnam on a much smaller scale, i have seen hundreds of photos of them taken by various people and i honestly didnt think i would be able to handle walking around millions of the things on my own...and i was half right! I left at 5am and got there for the sun set which was beautiful and then i went around Angkor Wat which for some reason is the main one (i probably would be a lot more interested in the temples if i either had a tour guide or had read up on them a bit, but alas - history isnt my forte) but as incredible as it is for Angkor Wat to still be standing and in such good condition after so many hundreds of years, I still wasnt overly impressed. Bayon was the second temple that i visited and that one was gorgeous, i actually enjoyed walking around this one and taking copious amounts of photos and i felt the same walking around Ta Prohm (which is where Tomb Raider was filmed (I hope that impresses you Mark, Issac and Sam) The main thing i liked about Ta Prohm were the tree roots, it hroughout a lot of the temple, they were stretched over the wall and in a lot of cases it was the roots alone that was holding the temple up and the roots are so windy and bendy and beautiful that i loved looking at them. I looked at one more temple which couldn't go in properly as it was being renovated and then i thought, right...thats enough - even though i had bought a whole or days ticket which entitled me to see 7 or 8 different temples, i was hot, i had a headache, my stomach was a bit tender from the night before and realistically, unless you are really into your history/architecture/geology etc....you can not see the Angkor temples without being with a friend, so you can mimic the status, have your picture taken with a headless statue (with your head in its place obviously) and generally having a bit of a giggle as you go round - so for this reason i left after seeing only a few temples, which i don't regret in the slightest - should i ever come back to Cambodia with a friend then maybe I'll give it another shot.
This afternoon i think the plan is to have a walk around the town and see what happens from there!
