Claire & Mike's Big Trip
Hi, here is my first postcard, hope I remember all the interesting bits !! Should explain some of the photos and bring you sort of up-to-date.
From Quebec we drove to Mount Carleton to camp (there are pictures of this). It was very very scenic and apparently the fishing is good too. Due to us literally being attacked by mozzies and horse flies we left the next day ! There were sightings of moose and bears but unfortunately we saw neither.
From Mount Carleton we drove to a small university town called Fredericton. Here we stayed in the student halls as it was summer holidays but the rooms were more like cells (from what I have seen on the telly !!) Not a lot to do, even the locals questioned why we were there !!
On to Saint John which along with Claire getting the speeding ticket has to be one of the highlights so far !! It is a very industrial port town, not a lot to do but it was good for a couple of nights camping. We were on top of a mountain overlooking the town and in the morning all you could see was fog and all you could hear were the ships sounding their foghorns. Anyway, whilst watching Greece beat Portugal in the Euro final in a local bar we got chatting to a local couple called Alex and John. They invited us round to dinner the next evening which was nice and a bit of a result. Well it was a result for me as I eat anything as you all know, unfortunately for Claire Alex had cooked lobster for start and steamed salmon for main !! I had two portions of both and Claire had lots of salad, result !!!!
Halifax in Nova Scotia was our next brief stop but it was much like Saint John but not as entertaining so I won't bother writing about it !
Next we went to a place called The Ovens where we camped along the coast (this is where there is a picture of me chopping wood with a piece of slate). We visited a lighthouse at a place called Peggy's Cove which was nice but much like any other lighthouse you've ever seen. Not much else to do apart from a walk along the caves in the cliffs.
Pictou was our next port of call. Pot luck it was the end of the lobster season in Pictou and so there was a local carnival going on with a fairground, band, floats, and silly people having bed races !! Here we stayed in a hostel run by a very nice would be hippy lady called Anne whose motto was "if you can't beat them, join them". We nearly found alternative accommodation though as there was a strong smell of cats, luckily we didn't. Anne's daughter was staying with a group of friends who we swiftly got talking to and were soon out with watching the local band in the "beer tent" which is more my cup of tea !!
From Pictou we drove for five hours to the Cape Breton highlands (much like the Scottish highlands). We had high expectations for our destination and we had a bit of trouble persuading Anne's daughter and co to let us leave !! Anyway, just our luck, it started to chuck it down, so bad that we were driving up the side of this mountain at about 5 mph and the visibility and road conditions were so bad we're lucky we didn't go over the side ! Apparently the views are breathtaking but we'll just have to take the locals word for that !! Anyway, unluckily again the hostel we were planning to stay in was full so we headed for a cheap guest house at a place called Meat Cove at the most northerly point of NS !! This was the start of another of our little missions as half way there the road disappeared and we found ourselves driving down the side of another mountain along a dirt track that 4x4's would have trouble with. Luckily I was at the wheel. This place looked how it sounded, very deserted and lonely, the sort of place you could disappear from !! After knocking at the guest house and getting no answer we decided to try all six houses in the "village" for the owner as we had made it this far and weren't going back !! After being chased by a pit bull with clipped ears we finally found her and she showed us to our room !! Result for me as I immediately went fishing in the river out the back and caught a load of trout !! The next day we decided the hostel was best for us and luckily they had room. We even managed to go whale watching in the pouring rain. Unfortunately Claire managed to get her digital camera wet and it died. On the bright side though, the pictures of the pilot whales still came out !! All in all Nova Scotia took bloody ages to get to and was very wet !!
Keep em peeled for more thrilling updates.
Spice.
