San Cristóbal de las Casas is a very pretty town in the Chiapas region of Mexico, it's a quirky place with cobbled streets and brightly-coloured buildings. In the morning I took a walk up to the Iglesia de Guadalupe church on a hill overlooking the town and then headed down into the centre for a nice breakfast with a chocolate milkshake
After walking around for a while we started to fade from the heat so we caught a little trolley-bus that drives around the town pointing out some of the main sights. There are lots of pretty churches, interesting markets and cool shops. The main square is surrounded by the impressive red-and-yellow cathedral and the domineering white Government Palace.
At night time, fairy lights lit up the trees and the town was buzzing with activity. We bought corn-on-the-cob from one of the street sellers, it was covered with lime juice and chilli powder and was crazy hot but tasty.
In the evening we went to see a documentary film about the Zapatistas - a guerilla army fighting for the rights of indigenous Mexicans, which originated in the Chiapas region and was particularly active in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Embarrassingly, I knew nothing about the Zapatistas before that so I was very glad to see the film and understand a little about the situation.
