Bariloche is in the picturesque Argentine Lake District, on the shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi, surrounded by mountains and forests. In the winter it is a ski resort and the town is largely geared towards that. Our accommodation was 20 kilometres away from the town, out in the countryside with no shops, restaurants or anything else nearby and a taxi into town was very expensive so we spent the first night just sitting around drinking wine and chatting at the hotel.
In the morning, after walking along the road for a long time, I eventually found the chair lift which took me to the top of a hill for what is one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen in my life - it was truly breathtaking! The mountains, lakes and forests were such bright vivid colours.
In the afternoon I took a bus into town and pottered around until dinner time when we went for juicy steaks. Afterwards we tracked down the Wilkenny Irish bar; it was pretty quiet so we checked out the club across the road - we were the ONLY people in it! Most people gave up and went back to the hotel at that point but Monica and I carried on and managed to find the one club where everyone in town seemed to be hiding - it was packed, hot and sweaty.
We met some tango musicians that were on holiday from Buenos Aires, we tried to talk to them in Spanish and they tried to teach us some tango - it was fun. When I started falling asleep in the club it was time to go... Then both Monica and I fell asleep in the taxi, the taxi driver took the wrong route and it ended up costing us a fortune to get home!
The following day we had a looong bus ride to Buenos Aires but the Argentine buses are fabulous - we were travelling in proper luxury. As we lay back watching movies, the air-steward-type staff served us lunch and dinner and then came round later with cookies and champagne!
