The landscape at Spitzkoppe is bizarre - flat desert for miles then a clump of hills spring up, made up of huge orange lumps that look smooth from afar but when viewed up close they're actually spiky, made up of tightly packed crystalline pieces. We made our camp among the hills - there is no running water or permanent buildings anywhere on the campsite though a couple of long-drop toilets had recently been set up as the place was apparently getting 'messy'.
I spent a long time climbing up and down the hills - it was a bit precarious in places but the views were fab - I felt like I was in the Lion King The whole group climbed one of the smaller hills to watch the sunset and Linda treated us to cheese and crackers (real cheese - very exciting! Camembert, brie, blue cheese and cream cheese). When we returned to the camp Sammy had whipped up an exceptional dinner over the camp fire - snook fish, asparagus, peas, creamed spinach and daupinoise potatoes (they were able to stock up on goodies in Swakopmund). It was amazing to have dinner with the backdrop of the orange hills on one side and the glowing sunset on the other side. After dinner we sat around the fire for a while, listened to some music and toasted marshmallows.
