I really enjoyed the two days I spent at the Elstei ger camp - it's a tourist complex in the countryside about 50km outside of Ulaanbaatar where each guest has their own ger tent and there's a central building with a restaurant/bar and bathrooms. Pav, Mel and Tom were also there. On the first night we stayed late in the bar, drinking Borgio (Mongolian lager) and chatting to the staff at the camp. Pav was telling them how he wanted to try Mongolian wrestling so the guys said they would take him on the next morning! It was hilarious - they kitted him out in the traditional little jacket and pants that Mongolian wrestlers wear and they tried to explain the customary moves at the beginning and end of a wrestling bought. The only tactic they taught him was to give his opponent a wedgie! Pav gave the Mongolian guy a good run for his money and was exhausted by the end of it.
Undoubtedly the highlight of my time in Mongolia was going horse riding at the Elstei camp - we rode through the countryside for a couple of hours to a huge silver monument of Genghis Khan (or Chinggis Khaan as it is written here), which was still in the final stages of being completed. It was so cold and windy that I was wearing seven tops and two pairs of trousers (pretty much all the clothes I had with me plus a fleece that Baagii lent me)! The excursion was so relaxing - total silence, clear blue skies and absolutely fantastic scenery. We galloped part of the way back, which was an achievement in itself seeing as I haven't been on a horse since I was about ten years old and even then it was only walking round a paddock on a pony.
Back in the bar in the evening, we had some more Borgio and played poker, using the ankle bones to bet with. The next morning we woke up to find an inch of snow on the ground! The weather here is crazy - it changes so dramatically and frequently. All the staff at the Elstei came out in the snow to wave us off. I've had an amazing time in Mongolia and will be sorry to leave.
