Last night, after a little catnap and a much needed shower, I headed out to a free concert. A famous philharmonic orchestra was performing for the annual "Sommernachtskonzert". Of course, once the concert started at 9:00, the rain started coming down very hard. The last thing I needed when starting 6 weeks of traveling was a cold, so I decided to leave after two songs. I made it back to hostel around 10:00 and slept for about 12 hours!
This morning, I woke up and I was pretty hungry. The hostel offers an all-you-can-eat breakfast for 5.90 euro, which I thought was bit steep. So, I went to a little grocery store down the road and picked up enough stuff for breakfast and lunch for 4 days about 11 euros. That's right 8x as many meals for less than twice the price. (Economics major for the win!!)
After breakfast and packing my lunch for the day, I set off to explore the city. Unfortunately, it was raining all day again, but I'm only here for a limited time so I decided to trek forward regardless of the weather.
I started my day at St. Stephen's cathedral. It has huge, colourful stained-glass windows which light up the whole church with magnificent colours. Afterwards, I went up to the south tower of the cathedral to enjoy panoramic views of the city. Getting to the top meant climbing 343 stairs! The views were well worth the climb, and I got a bit of a workout first thing in the morning.
From there, I walked down toward the Habsburg residence to see the palace. I took an audioguide tour of the palace, which showcased the extensive dinnerware collections, the empress Elizabeth (aka Sisi), and the furnished imperial apartments of the royal couple.
After my day of exploring, I headed back to the hostel and grabbed some bratwurst for dinner on the way there!
