Antelope Park 14th and 15th September 2009
Jenny and I upgraded to Tent Accomodation overlooking the lake. The tent was large with comfy beds, deck chairs and our own toilet and shower. We could hear the lions roaring throughout the day and night.
Antelope Park is home to ALERT - one of the world's leading conservation programmes to help save the African lion from extinction. ALERT is the subject of a major award-winning wildlife documentary which aired to over 3 million people in the UK every week for 2 seasons - "LION COUNTRY"
Set in over 3000 acres of open savannah grassland, Antelope Park is a unique game reserve. I walked with lions, had a ride through the wilderness on an elephant, viewed the wildlife in the Park on a sunset cruise in a canoe on the lake. Watched the Lions being fed, went on a game drive and played with lion cubs.
The game drive was amazing. There were herds of Impala, Zebras', Giraffes' , wildebeasts, and lions. There were so many different species of animals and birds. It was breathtaking. We actually saw two giraffe fighting. It was fascinating how they hit each other with their long necks.
After the game drive I went with a few of our group to see them ride elephants into the river. When it came Jenny and Dani's turn the elephant threw them off onto the ground. Both of them were really shaken up and it was lucky no one was seriously injured. Both went to the local hospital for treatment. I took this as a reminder that these animals are WILD..................
