In south east Asia whatever they tell you when you book a bus is probably a lie.
Getting from laos to cambodia:
Got collected from the guest house at 7pm.
Left at 9pm on a sleeper bus for 10hours which was alrighttt, then changed on to a mini bus which took us to another sleeper bus, but this sleeper bus was already over capacity so there was about 4 people per bed, which aren't more than 1m wide and 2m long. We were on this bus until around 9pm. Chickens get more room. But we did then get put on a sitting bus to siem reap and got to a hotel by 1am. The brightside is no journey can ever be as brutal!
We took a walk to the shop, as we were starving after traveling for 30 hours, in my pajamas which fitted in well, these poor people on the street are emotion evoking, even if you think you've mentally prepared yourself for the poverty how do I tell a small girl clutching hold of the cereal box I'd just bought no she can't have it because I'm hungry?! We also got approached by a lady trying to sell us her baby for $1.
The next day we took a walk around pub street and the old market, a man approached me guiding a blind boy and again offered to sell him to me for $1. Babies and children were offered to us on a number of occasions.
Child neglect, abuse and trafficking are big issues here.
Michael also got offered an AK-47 or any machine gun he wanted could be obtained, just whilst buying a drink.
We spent our Saturday night at the local orphanage, never have I met such an amazing bunch of children, all with horrendous backgrounds but with the biggest smiles. We took with us some items to give the children, Michael and jack both gave there trainers to them, these kids have got some stylish high-tops! I gave the best pair of shoes I had. We also gave some clothes, pens, whatever toiletries we could find and some money! They perform a traditional Khmer dance every evening to raise money to improve their living conditions. Check out there website (www.acodo.org). Even as we leaving they wouldn't let go of my hand, I couldn't say goodbye, just that I'd be see them again.
We also visited the crocodile farm, with crocs ranging from 1 - 80years old! Fed some crocodiles, in what didn't seem to be the safest of enclosures!
The war museum is nothing like England's idea of museums. It's all outside with the rusty equipment and tanks that people actually died in. It was based upon an old battlefield where they dug up a mass grave of 200. Landmines are still a big problem in cambodia also, with 3million unfound. Our tour guide was missing an arm due to a landmine explosion that killed his family. The government does not put people missing limbs in to education or support them in anyway, most are incapable of getting jobs. They have no anethesetic here either so the operation consisted of him being awake, have a wire slice at his arm for 2hours and as he is still growing he has to have the extra bone growing threw cut off every 4 years in the same way.
Cambodia has been the biggest eye opener to all of us.
In Singapore airport now waiting for our flight to Perth!!
South east Asia it's been a whirlwind experience, blowing kisses in to the wind, I'm sure I'll see you again <3
Take care, love always, Chels xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
