First blog in a long time, we've been far too busy having fun! ;o)
So we arrived in Kanchanaburi and were picked up from the Train Station by our Guesthouse - nice touch! We were expecting a normal car or taxi but instead we got our first ride in a sorng-taa-ou.......basically a pick up truck with makeshift seats and roof. They're everywhere, you just flag one down if it's going in your direction, jump onboard with maybe with 11 other people and your off!Our accommodation was at VN Guesthouse, living in a river raft.It was pretty cool, floating on the river, with an amazing view. The only downside was getting rocked about whenever a boat went passed!Dean loved it from the beginning, I thought it was going to make me puke!It was pretty fun when you were in the loo or shower, or trying to wash the dye off your hair when a karaoke boat goes by!
We had a pretty chilled out time whilst we were here, saved some pennies, and hardly drank any beer!Got to give our bodies a break once in a while!Think we've definitely been drinking far too many Changs!
We got a good history lesson when we visited the Death Railway Musuem and the actual Death Railway. The Musuem was a pretty moving place, can't believe how the Prisioners of War were treated.Dean thought it was boring and had too much reading!!We walked across the Bridge over the River Kwai/Death Railway, nice to say we've did it, but you could be walking over any bridge/railway.Actually that's a lie as I don't think any other bridge has a bright coloured tourist train nearly knocking you into the water each time it goes passed! We thought that kind of spoiled it but it is Thailand and they make money from anything they can!
We managed to get in quite a bit of exercise.Hired bikes and visited Wat Tham Khao Pun, a collection of 9 Buddhist caves. The hill we had to cycle up to get there was HUGE!I ended up having to get off my bike halfway up and push it the rest of the way.Meanwhile Dean was skitching a lift from a passing motorbike foodcart!!We'd read that a British tourist had been murdered here by a drug crazed Monk (surely Monks aren't allowed to be drug crazed!?), so when we were the only ones in the caves I was freaking out and wanted to get round as fast as possible! It didn't help that when we got to caves 5 or 6 there were bats keeping us company! We had a fantastic day climbing the seven tier waterfall at Erawan National Park. Our boots came into good use again! So many people were climbing with flip flops - we were so smug with our booties on!!The waterfall was gorgeous, it's just a shame the water was freezing and full of huge fish that nibbled at your skin.Honestly there is no need to pay for a Fish Spa if your here, just stick your feet in the water and fish about ten times the size of the ones in a Spa will munch on your feet forfree!
The food here was pretty good, so cheap, most Thai dishes in every restaurant were a pound. One morning we got normal bacon, and one lunchtime Dean had a chicken & mushroom pie with chips and gravy! So tasty!!Normally at home we wouldn't go for pie & chips but you totally start craving normal pub grub. After our climb up the waterfall we had a gorgeous pizza at an Italian on the main street, we were starving since all we had whilst climbing was a hardboiled egg and some nuts!We finished it off with a samsong (Thai Whisky) and coke at the Get Drunk for 10baht bar.In our words this is the Get Drunk for 20p bar!
Next stop Chiang Mai!
Lots of Love
