Hello Corfu & ladies- Michelle, Aivi and Leena. Who would have thought we would be holidaying together? Oh football, you have done it again...
And hasn't this already been quite the adventure...
A few days ago having lovingly farewelled my family in Austria. From Salzburg, I hopped on a train to Villach, followed by a double decker bus continuing my journey south. Venice.
Original plan was canned immediately upon arrival. I collected my bag from the bus, little more humid :-/ My shirt rapidly soaked beneath my back-pack, not too worry. Yet. My plan...once in Venice at the ferry port book a ticket to Corfu= where the girls were. I motioned towards the docks, appearing closer than reality. In the hazy distance i can see my destination. Minoaon Lines. Thats me.
Little did i know the lines i had intended on tripping with over the Atlantic, shut down the day before.
Crap.
I sat down, my bag at my feet, allowing my back to breath. I do sweat a lot. This translucent look, revealing my bra, might be a little risque for the time of day, and general location.
I had two options. Stay in Venice for a few days. And make my way to Bulgaria by the 15th for my Permaculture course. OR. Lug my bag to the train station (where ever it was), and spend 6 hours rolling further south to Ancona. It didn't make much sense to be in Venice, and not really see the place. Friends or Venice?
Time with friends. Decision made. South to Ancona.
Traveling blindly yet... intuitively, is my kind of style. Which i do enjoy. But its not all fun. Its actually hard work. Fellow travelers would understand? We under-go a lot of angst, dealing with the un-known. I can't really describe it. You just have to experience it. This is one of the reasons travelling on my own appeals so... Just not sure if another being would enjoy the 'laxy daisiness' of my adventures. I do eventually arrive at the destination, just not so direct. Ah the old cliche, tis all about the journey huh. Cliches will forever suffice.
By the time i had made it to Ancona, booked myself in to a hotel. I was a happy woman. I was prepared to spend a little more than usual. Yes please, bath and complimentary champagne. I had a few sips, not one for alcohol at the moment. Can hardly taste anything anyway, my face is clogged up.
I set foot outside the following morning to book my ticket. Check out was midday, and i knew the ferry was departing at 2pm. Nothing heavily sign posted made it a little tricky to locate, no bag this time, much more comfortable meandering than the evening before. I had my camera in tow and walked aimlessly having booked a spot on the ferry. Phew.
Ancona itself, is more of an in-between place for travelers. It is known as the docking bay for tourists and trucks. A shame actually. The town itself is gorgeous. Delightful doors. Mother would have been in her element.
I didn't feel the need to book a cabin. I had my sleeping mat, sleeping bag, nan's pillow. Initially i wanted to sleep outside on the deck. Was a bit windy though. Plus, a few creepy men had approached me up their since departing, offering me a coffee, beer, anything. Tis not the way to a woman's heart fellas.
Sitting outside people watching was my afternoon. Then sleep.
Arrived in Corfu eventually, just as i thought.
Sal.
