Despite the unpromising start with the fog, we arrived at our hostel and asked what we should do whilst in town. They recommended that we hire bikes and ride to Fruttigar, which we then proceeded to do.
Unfortunately, we hadn't been on a bike since San Francisco, and he didn't mention that the 32km over to Fruttigar was over quite possibly the hilliest terrain I've ever seen. Or so it felt. We got lost at least twice, were chased by a dog who came within a metre of snapping at my bike (that got me up the next hill VERY quickly) and by the end were absolutely shattered. It was however a gorgeous ride, up the side of the lake, with amazing views of the volcano in Osorno on the other side. The weather had cleared up and was idyllic, and the houses were lovely, all made with wooden slats along the sides. And we even passed the nestle factory and felt obliged to have a big bar of milk chocolate!
When we finally arrived (two hours later than the original two hours the guy had said it was) Fruttigar was also beautiful. It is just on the lake, with an amazing pier and fantastic theatre. Well worth the trip.
Later when we got back to Puerto Varas we had dinner at a fantastic restaurant, with the nicest salad I've had in South America (admittedly that's not many) and pisco sours for 1000 pesos each - £1.20! By the time we got back to bed we pretty much passed out with exhaustion!
