26/06/11 One mornings rain, 2 Aussies, 2 Brits and 8 glorious weeks in Croatia, New Greece, New Tuscany call it what you want it’s a fantastic country.
We started at the Hungarian border at Szepetmek where the very nice lady with the gun, Couldn’t find our Campers back door (its on the opposite side to the Europeans vans) After some giggling on our part which led a thorough search on hers, We made up our minds to head off to explore the island of Krk as we loved it so much in 2009, This time we started on the far south in the ancient ferry port Baska, Like so many Croatian towns its made of medieval narrow lanes where the flagstones have been polished by time and tourism hasn’t impacted yet, you purchase freshly caught squid at the harbour and time has stood still, Its so laid back.
After 12 days we moved up the coast to the islands main town of Krk an old fortified religious town and that has a supermarket one of the key reasons for moving, It was here we met our 2 Aussie friends having their mid life overseas experience which seemed to have gone on forever!!! This was the first time we had conversed with anyone in their native tongue for over 6 weeks as most of the other tourists are mainly Germans, Dutch and Austrians and a very friendly bunch.
20/07/11 Startled we woke up to rain, So as not to waste a day we moved northward to Medulin on the southern tip of the Istrian peninsular where the towns have an Venetian appearance and the sun reappeared by lunch, A huge but empty site where a mixture of politics and the recession has hit hard, it was here we really gave up on the idea of finding work, We knew we were late in the season but no dive shops are doing any business and the sea is bloody freezing at 22 degree’s, Not like the hot bath we are used to. Still the air temperature was so hot we became a 2 fan van
At the town of Rovinj where Abramovich had moored his small (including helicopter but pleasant) yacht the Eclipse in the bay here, We started to notice a small amount of Italians arriving by mid August at Porec as the Huns left to go ever northward home , It turned into a passionate hollering, Crazy animated hand waving nightmare of a full on invasion force with the arrogant b*****s everywhere. Luck would have it we met Tim and Margaret fellow travellers so there was some respite and had some good nights with them listening to really good? bands playing on the beach.
Still heading north our final stop was at Umag, Camped amongst the olive and fig trees we could see the sparkling lights of Slovenia across the bay, So after 8weeks we changed our plans again
22/08/2011 Bright lights here we come, and of course Italy to look forward to!!. So sad to say farewell for now to Croatia but Arnie once said we’ll be back
