Okay so I'm not quite done with Asia just yet, with 9 days left here in The Philippines (I'll get onto writing that blog at the airport) seems as I have several hours and flights in less than a day!
So anyway whilst lying on the beach these past 2 days I've put together my most memorable snippets of my travels around SE Asia.
So here you have it my highlights and lowlights of South East Asia April-August 2011:
My favorite place of all: BORNEO (Sabah) - Not only is it untouched but the Diving, Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, and last but definitely not least Mount Kinabalu were the things I had expected out of my round the world trip…….Okay so please can I have a few…..a close 2nd or I'll call it a joint 1st it was that good, goes to koh Tao, 2nd - Chaing Mai 3rd - Hoi An.
My Worst place of all: Cebu City (Philippines) and Nha Trang (Vietnam) Cebu is just ugly and one of the most dangerous cities I have visited, whilst Nha Trang had its Blackpool infused theme park it and it's toilet infused sea. I had a great time, but it was the people not the place, for sure.
Best City: Sexy Singapore Baby. It oozes sophistication and my first time Couch Surfing was a blast!
Worst City: Bangkok - what a dump! Khao San Road was a big disappointment although the backpacker accommodation was pretty good. As my starting point with my fellow Thaintro group it will always have a place close to my heart, but I could've been I the back street alley's of anywhere. I can honestly say that the only good thing about the City is that they sold the best Iced Coffees ever!
Best Island: Koh Tao- My Favorite place of all, I just loved it! It was my first glimpse of paradise, there was great food (crazy pancake man) fun nights out, and not forgetting DIVING and THE WHALE SHARK! This place has it all and wins a special place in my heart.
Worst Island: Jeese….F@*k I don't know….before I wrote this I seriously couldn't think of many good reasons why I'd want to stay or come back to SE Asia….I clearly like this place more than I thought. I don't think I hated an 'Island' that much but worst place…LAOS wins hands down, ignorant miserable people, disgusting food, the worst buses and…ok you get it, I don't like this place.
Best Organised Tour: Snake Village!! Okay, so slaying a snake isn't everyone's cup of tea, and the Rice Wine 'Cocktails' weren't all that delicious. But what an experience and we had so much fun. Matt our Obnoxious American host topped it off by being so hot J
Worst Organised Tour: Cu Chi Tunnels, they just took us to their friend's places on the way there and back for us to buy stuff. The Cu Chi tunnels their selves are really interesting but this wasn't the guide's priority.
Best Transport: Flight from Hanoi to Kota Kinabalu (Borneo) it was only a 3 hour trip but I didn't want it to end. It was a piece of cake compared to the awful buses we'd encountered on our journey. We had Movies and Music along with a meal and limitless wine.
Worst Transport: Just about every bus journey was pretty bad but the most haunting was the 'Sleeper' bus from Laos to Cambodia, where Lucy and I had to lie in an anorexic dwarf sized bed for about 10 hours. That was before we then got transferred onto a minibus for 8 people with approx. 15 others and our backpack's for another hellish 5 hour journey.
Best Beach: This wasn't at all difficult as I've become quite the beach snob these days but I have a joint winner - Jungle Beach, Vietnam and Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Thailand. I think Lucy would agree that we felt like we were in paradise on both beaches, white sands, crystal clear water, and most importantly no tourist's (except us of course)
Worst Beach: Nha Trang, if sh*t and sanitary towels are what you come on holiday for crack on, there's plenty floating about, but be sure to catch something at the same time, just yuck!
Best Accommodation: Dreams Hotel, Da Lat, Vietnam. This was definitely our most luxurious stay. We had full breakfast cooked fresh for us every morning, with real bacon, eggs, and so much more and not forgetting the Sauna and Jacuzzi on the roof top, just bliss!
Worst Accommodation: Leylings (I think it was called) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia- it was like a windowless sauna which we shared with cockroaches and we had to lug our backpacks up a flight of around 50 steep steps. The only way to get to sleep was to dream about going back to the blue pumpkin the next day.
Best Food- The food I cooked in Chiang Mai. Just Delicious and since travelling on in SE Asia, Thailand definitely wins on the food front, but it's something I didn't appreciate at the time.
Worst Food: Snake in each and every way that it was served to us in Hanoi, Vietnam (not forgetting what we washed it down with)
Best Cocktail: I won't be a snob here and say G & T or Margarita….it was the Sangsom concoction of Red Bull and Sprite/Coke served up in a bucket with multiple straws whilst I danced the nights away on several beaches in Thailand.
Worst Cocktail: Well this didn't taste too bad but the thought of it will always make me cringe, so I have to say the Rice wine infused with snakes blood and snakes bile.
Best Toilet: Any public toilet in Singapore is immaculate.
Worst Toilet-…In complete contrast to Singapore where you could dine off the toilet seat, just about any public toilet in Thailand (especially the buses/trains) is enough to make anyone vomit. But the one good thing to come of the squatter is that my legs soon went from thunder thighs to thighs of steel.
Best Party: Kho Phangan, by a mile. Beach party every night, the half-moon party and being with the best people I could've hoped for to start off my adventure. A great way to break me into the world of backpacking.
Worst Party: Laos- Yes you go Tubing every day (if you want to) but it doesn't start till around 2pm and finishes around 8pm, and if you're like most people you will not make it to "the only" bar that is Q bar afterwards, an utter disappointment.
Best People I have met: Whilst traveling I have met so many interesting people. Some merely pass by others make a real impact and you know you'll always stay in touch. It's hard to name just one person here, and it's even harder to name everybody. There are just so many people that I have met and have truly made this trip what it is.
A big shout out goes to….
My Thaintro group leader MINA MINA!!! Will always be a good friend. And of course Thaintro Group 17th April (you know who you are) in particular, the lovely Lucy Carty, Aimee McHale, Simon Worthington, Bear Gryl's and Nessa Noo.
Bjorn Godfrey for keeping me up to date with Eastenders (talking of Eastenders I'm way off track, Boo where are you?!)
Hanoi Backpacker Hostel tour leaders: Matt (for snake village) Andy, Dan and Chris (Halong Bay) and Max and Kieran for the constant flow of free beers.
The Reading Uni Boys and Girls who we constantly bumped into: Hatti, Emma, Siobahn, Jack, Howesy, Andy, Pidgeon and George.
The Lovely Scottish Siobhan Dearey, and for all her help and advice on future travels.
Soooo many Tuk Tuk Drivers who took us anywhere and everywhere for next to nothing and waited all day long for us.
Our amazing Trekker's, Pong, Jeffrey and family (Chiang Mai), such friendly people and amazing cooks.
All my bed and bunk bed buddies I've made along the way
Our Irish Girls, Aoife, Sarah and Elaine, who made our stay in Laos a good one at the end and a great Cambodia Trip and the start of Vietnam.
The Dutch boys, Abel, Tomas, Maks and Daniel, such darlings and great fun, can't wait to go to Amsterdam next June.
My Dive buddies in Sipadan, Petra, Matt, Mel, and cheeky Frederick and Nicolai, not forgetting the staff Sham the manager for running an amazing dive site.
Ben Craemaer and Angie for giving a first time Couch Surfing experience i'll never forget.
……..and last but not least the Filipino family I am staying with now, truly amazing people and I love them all the more for getting me wasted on Red Horse and G & T every night then taking me to Karaoke.
I didn't think I'd hear myself say this but Asia I will miss you!
