We arrived in Saigon too early to check in so we freshened up and headed to the Cu Chi tunnels just outside the city. It was a swelteringly humid day and even the shade of the trees did not help. It was great to see how the Guerilla fighters lived and what they had to deal with, seeing the B52 bomb craters and tiny living spaces, it was fascinating. Pete shot an AK47 and as you can see from the photo looks very cool doing it, but no I did not let him buy a souvenir one. When it came to going in the tunnels I chickened out, I went down the first part, but after seeing more steps down and everyone stopping in front of me there was no way I could do it. Good job I didn't go any further as Pete said you had to crawl and it was pitch black.
After checking in and showering, finally clean we headed back out into the heat and headed to the War remnants museum. It is a fascinating place and we learnt so much about the Vietnam/American war, which in the west is obviously not widely known. We saw some harrowing photos and read some shocking statistics, but all the way through you were amazed at the resiliance and strength of the Vietnamese people. At the end of the photo section, there is a display of pictures done by Vietnamese children of peace and a happy world. We carried on our brief tour of the city, passing the Reunification Palace, the 'Notre Dame' of Vietnam and finally the post office.
That night we were out celebrating one of groups birthday, so we had another good meal this time Italian at a place called 'Good Morning Vietnam'. It seems on this trip when a birthday happens, karaoke happens and this night was no different. So after a taxi ride where the guy took us in a square and tried to charge us double what the others paid we arrived at the karaoke place. This time I did Chaka Khan 'Ain't nobody' and Ace of Base 'All that she wants'.
After a late night we managed to get a lie in and seeing as our hotel room only had a window looking out onto the hall, the sun didn't wake us up either. Today was our farewell lunch with Phat, as we get a new leader to take us through Cambodia. It is a sad day as Phat has been such a great leader and also it means we don't have much longer with the group. After travelling for over 40 days with these people and spending most of your time with them, it will be strange saying goodbye. Hopefully we will meet up in Thailand as we all seem to be staying there for a month or so.
Vietnam has been an amazing country, one which we will definitely visit again and a country I would recommend to anyone.
