We stayed one night at Port Hedland, with just enough time to wander the town and Port area, book the campgrounds in Karijini at the visitor centre and do the Twilight Bus Tour. On the tour we were driven out to see from a distance, the salt and iron ore mining operations that happen in Port Hedland. We crossed the border into Western Australia, admiring the beautiful, changing landscapes as we headed towards Kununurra. We gained an hour and a half as we hit the WA time zone and reached the Agricultural Showgrounds at only 9.30 in the morning. We left Tennent Creek behind us as we head up towards Darwin. On the way we stopped at the free camps at both Newcastle Waters and King River. We did a quick food shop in Katherine before heading out to Pussycat Flats at Pine Creek. We left Curtin Springs and headed towards the Ayers Rock camp grounds at Yulara. We were a day early but hoped to get an extra day at the resort. This didn’t happen though as the park was too busy so we went back to the free camp about 10 kms away. Not wanting to unhook and leave the van there, we decided to have a lazy day and enjoy the scenery with the view of Uluṟu in the background.
