Now where was I? Ah yes, we were about to go to my favourite restaurant. Stopped off at TukTuk- you remember that - for a whistle wetter and a quick watch of the cricket T20!
Foliage is just across the road. Seated in full view of the open kitchen, this gave us something to watch as chef individually prepared each dish. He is a forager and it is fair to say that the menu had gone a bit ‘wonky’ since last time and there wasn’t a great deal that we fancied. Andy started with zebra neck in a steamed bun and was disappointed that it wasn’t as stripey as he had imagined! This was only received after
a) we had been served a small mug of some sort of weed tea which, allegedly, was designed to “open our palates”. Hmm. And
b) 40+ minutes after we had arrived
Eventually, after another 20 minutes or so the roast belly of pork turned up. If one discounted the fish with banana and coconut (obvs a no no for Lin) this was what looked like the best choice. However, it wasn’t slow roasted so most of it was fat and the meat wasn’t that tender! Hey ho, Andy is going to have to review his ‘suggestions’ sheet!
This morning we were recommended by the guest house owner to go to the Leeu Estates hotel - a newish but beautiful 5* hotel set in a beautiful location looking at the mountains across the valley. He Mr Leeu, a wealthy Indian) has also done his best to buy up Franschhoek including another hotel in the village, a couple of restaurants and the TukTuk.
We thought about checking in for a couple of nights but were put off by the £1000 per night price tag! We settled for 2 cups of coffee at £3.50! Chatting to another couple who had come for breakfast it turned out there were only three or four tables used in the restaurant so the price tag seemed to have put off the rest of the world as well! It is, however, a beautiful spot with beautiful gardens, sculptures, vines and was very quiet- see above!
A spot of lunch back in the village and yet another afternoon by the pool. Still hot but bearable today. Tomorrow we are heading off to Hout Bay for a week at the seaside.
More to follow.
