Ben on Tour
Greetings from Lesotho. This, I'm led to believe is one of only 3 countries surrounded completely by another single country. The other two.... answers on a postcard trivia buffs!
After leaving Cape Town I passed through the wine region - a spectacular fertile plain trapped by mountains on both sides. Quite stunning scenery which I'll have to investigate further next time (how often will I find myself saying that I wonder?). Travelled along what they call the Ge\arden Route calling in at George, Wilderness, and Knysna before making a mad rush to Port Elizabeth ("P.E."). Would have benefitted from a car on the Garden Route to see more of the inland locations. However there were some stunning almost empty beaches and some indigenous forest land. Enjoyed some pleasant walks. Stayed in a lovely backpacker's lodge called Fairy Knowe which has its own station for the Outakina Chou-Tjoo (the old steam train running from George to Knysna). Knysna is a coastal lagoon (and a bit of a tourist resort). Continued my on/off flirtation with the First Test and finally made a mad rush for P.E. to catch what had the prospects of being a good final day.... until a S.A. collapse whilst on the the 7 hour bus ride left little play on day 5. Did get to see the victory where Andrew Strauss picked me out of the crowd with his six.
Whizzed through Durban and Pietermaritzburg to the Drakensburg Mountains at Sani Pass on the S.A./Lesotho border to spend a very pleasant Christmas. Stunning mountain scenery and thunderstorms in a real away-from-it-all location. The Lodge is well-run and attracts walkers but otherwise the area lacks tourists. The owner Russell was a pleasant and knowledgable guy who used to umpire in Zimbabwe (including Eglands early 'A' Tour there - Hick, Botham et al). Took a day trip into Lesotho on Christmas Eve - the National Dress appears to be blanket (needed at 3000m) and wellies!! Lesoth is the country with the highest low-point (more for the Trivia buffs). Had some great walks with a variety of other backpackers. Befriended two girls from Durban who gave me a lift back to Durban and looked after me while there. Very genuine peole. Helped me feel really welcome.
Spent 3 days at the Second Test seeing an England fightback in hot (35 degrees C and humid too) conditions only for bad light to spoil the final session with England poised for an unlikely victory.
Fly on to J'burg tomorrow.
