Below is the promise in the Lib-Dem 2005 Manifesto that I voted for. Please read the last line. So why are you bkierang this promise on the Reform Treaty which is 95% the same as the Constitution?!MAKE EUROPE MOREEFFECTIVE AND DEMOCRATICMembership of the EU has beenhugely important for British jobs, environmental protection, equalityrights, and Britain’s place in theworld. But with enlargement totwenty-five member states, theEU needs reform to become moreefficient and more accountable. The new constitution helps toachieve this by improving EUcoherence, strengthening thepowers of the elected EuropeanParliament compared with theCouncil of Ministers, allowingproper oversight of the unelectedCommission, and enhancing therole of national parliaments. Italso more clearly defines and limitsthe powers of the EU, reflectingdiversity and preventing overcentralisation. We are thereforeclear in our support for theconstitution, which we believe is inBritain’s interest – but ratificationmust be subject to a referendum ofthe British people.
