Had a fairly chilled out day, and took a walk around the Botanical Gardens by the Opera House. We thought about having a tour around but it was rather expensive and looked extremely touristy. Getting close to the Opera house it defiantly doesn't look as impressive. The tiles that make up the outside looked more of a dingy yellow, and the structure was just concrete, as was the inside. It looked like it was unfinished and the foyer where you buy the tickets looked like a run-down London tube station. I know it's an Iconic building but in truth it didn't wow me too much.
It felt like everyone there was taking pictures more to say to their friends and family that they have actually been there more than enjoying looking at it or being there.
In the evening we popped out to grab some thai food, a few beers and it was soo good to sit down and chill for the evening. The food was amazing as well.
Next day I felt wiped, I think just being on the road, walking around Sydney and surfing really took it out of me and I didn't feel like doing too much. We headed to the North side of Botany Bay, saw some more whales and then found out that the piece of coast we had been seeing all these whales was called the Whale Highway and it's the main migration route for thousands of Humpbacks, Southern Right and Minke whales heading North for the Winter.
Next Morning sadly we had to say goodbye to Jenny as she had to return to the US. So then there were three and it was back on the Road for our drive up to Queensland. First Stop was Port Stephens three hours north of Sydney. We stayed in a nice little Cabin in a small town on the river called Karuah. We headed out to see Nelsons Bay further round the bay, but it was further than we thought and got there too late to do anything but grab an Indian. I felt especially bad as I really wanted Jenny to see some Roo's on her visit and we saw loads on route to Nelsons Bay the very evening she left.
Hunter Valley was next on the hit list, and what a great day we had. We visited multiple wineries, an artisanal chocolate shop and a local cheese supplier. Tasted lots of good wine and one really good one I had to buy. Visited a place called Tuk Tuk Burgers and it was probably the best Burger I have ever had in my life. I wish we had some more time here to try more food and wine. Defiantly need to go back.
Time to move on again and this time we drove another couple of hours north to Port Macquarie. We took the scenic route as it was not the longest drive and we found a place called Seal Rock. We had to fight though some road works but boy oh boy was it worthwhile. A huge cove with crystal clear water and not a soul in sight. When we got into Port Macquaire we visited a Koala Hospital, where lots of Sick and injured Koala's were being looked after, which was nice. Then took a walk on beach, and found a little family run Italian for dinner.
Final day of driving to get to Queensland but it was a long seven hour drive. This was not helped by some of the most stupid road works speed limits I have ever seen! Around 30 kilometres of road at a reduced speed and they were working on 1 kilometre of it! We stopped at Coffs Harbour and had lunch on beach before arriving in Surfer's Paradise in the early evening. We dumped our bags, went out to find some food and found a very good Indian. We some grabbed beers, and watched an amazing game of footy, Cats scored in the last 30 seconds to beat the Blues…I know that probably means nothing to you but there you go.
Saturday 7th June. Day 145 in Australia. We got up late, David was watching the tennis, and unfortunately Murray lost. Then we went to the Currumbin Animal Sanctuary, which was good fun to see Kangaroo's and Koalas up so close and then we chilled in the evening and I cooked up some noodles.
Dunkeld to Surfers Paradise 3000k drive!
