Our Practice Run for Retirement
This will be a very short blog. We've spent the last 48 hours in a little town (population ~15,000) called Port Lincoln. The reason for coming here was to do some cage diving with Great White Sharks.
Unfortunately our timing sucked. Up until 2 weeks ago when a pod of Killer Whales came through the area, Calypso Diving (our tour operator) had seen Great Whites on every trip since April 2014. The working theory is that the Killer Whales scared Jaws away temporarily. So there are apex predators and then there are APEX Predators.
Calypso was very forthcoming on the lack of sharks, emailing us last week and offering us an 80% refund. We looked at options to change our plans and stay in Adelaide instead of coming to Port Lincoln but there were very few hotel rooms available in Adelaide thanks to the Fringe Festival and the Cricket World Cup. We didn't want to accelerate our trip to Brisbane since we already have almost 2 weeks there but most of all we both really wanted to see the Great Whites and didn't want to give up.
After a very short flight on a reasonably comfortable puddle jumping prop plane we arrived in Port Lincoln on Sunday morning with fingers crossed that the Sunday Calypso tour would see sharks and open the way for our fun on Monday morning. After settling into our room and a lunch of Fish and Chips (which was the best we've had in Australia so far), we set out to enjoy the sites of Port Lincoln. About 30 minutes later with all sites fully explored we bought some groceries and headed back to the room to post the Adelaide blog and watch a movie.
We found out later in the afternoon that there were still no sharks to see, so we cancelled our trip and took the refund. The weather had turned cold (low 70's) and windy and neither of us was particularly interested in a 7 hour boat ride with little chance of success. The upside of this meant that we had another full day in Port Lincoln to really explore in detail. Monday after breakfast we took another 30 minutes and really got to know the best of Port Lincoln. The rest of the day we spent catching up on reading, email, finances, planning the rest of our trip in Australia and starting to plan for our trip in the RV once we returned to the US.
It would have been nice if it had worked out but then of course if everything went according to plan than there wouldn't be that much adventure. Diving with the Great Whites is back on the bucket list, next time maybe from Cape Town South Africa
Off to Brisbane tomorrow where it is supposed to rain for the next 5 days :-)

Jake Butterbaugh Too bad ... I really appreciated this ... "we took another 30 minutes and really got to know the best of Port Lincoln" When you come back to the states, I want you to go to Hebron Nebraska, home of the worlds largest porch swing. You will have much more than 30 minutes of fun.
Sami But nobody cares that the thing that scared away Great White Sharks is still in the water?!
