The text at the bottom reads (and I'm paraphrasing here) that the natives were aggressive when the Spanish arrived so those brave Christian soldiers had to burn their villages and slaughter them in order to bring religion to the land. Funny how they might not be best pleased to see a group of heavily armed invaders setting up camp and claiming their island for Madre Espanol. The impudence!
