Our flights to England included a stopover in Frankfurt, Germany which we extended to take a look around. We stayed in small city called Mainz for both nights. We visited a near the nearby city of Wiesbaden for a couple of hours and took a tour to Heidelberg from Frankfurt.
Mainz is a 2000 year old city of historical buildings, monuments and museums. There is the Roman temple, the royal palace, the Cathedral and Marc Chagall‘s Blue Windows. Mainz’s Old Town had broad, roomy squares and places, lovingly-restored half-timbered houses and magnificent Baroque churches giving it charming, “gemuetlich” character.
Wiesbaden is bigger than Mainz with historic buildings, half-timbered houses and cobble-stone streets, small shops and boutiques.
Heidelberg is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. We visited the world famous castle ruins, a castle that after being destroyed was rebuilt to look like ruins. We spent time looking around the medieval town center including the old bridge, church of the holy spirit and small lanes with half timbered houses.
