This is a replica of the treaty, found with water damage and eat in part by rats, that formed the basis of the relationship between the Maori and the Europeans. It essentially gave the Maori the protection of the Queen, if they gave her representatives right of first refusal for land purchases. An entire section of the museum was dedicated to the interpretation of this treaty, which is vastly different between the two parties. Recently, the Maori won a 1 billion dollar settlement for their native lands based on the wording and interpretation of the document.
