People use long bamboo poles to knock tamarind pods from high up in the trees. We saw this in the village in Thailand, too. There are sweet and sour varieties of tamarinds. The sour version is used to make soups, and the sweet version is eaten as a snack. The seeds are also eaten and taste almost roasted, but they are hard as rocks.
