So we're about to leave Queenstown, home of almost any extreme sport you can wave a bungy cord at. We were intending to head for Milford Sound next, however, somebody just informed us that the road there is closed due to possible avalanches (avalanches?!) so we might need to revert to plan B there!
Whilst we're waiting for Bryce to upload his kind offer to 'guest blog' a 'version' of our activities in Christchurch and Dunedin we thought we'd fill you in on Queenstown, where we've crash landed into the world of hostels again, after Bryce and Sarah's great hospitality. It's very picturesque here and 'the Remarkables' mountain range reminds us very much of Switzerland, it's a shame we're not here during the skiing season otherwise I'm sure I'd be willing to don another all-red outfit (kindly donated by HC last time) and turn myself into a human fireball crashing down the slopes. Instead, we've made do with some outstanding white water rafting and I even compelled myself (but not Beth) to do the 109m Canyon Swing which was predictably tricky - and fairly traumatic for Beth to watch as well. Look out for the photos!
Luckily, I survived to go rafting in the afternoon to ensure Adrenalin levels were booming. Whilst the Swing was bloody scary, the Rafting was thoroughly enjoyable not least for our comedy wet suit, 'booty's', hard hat and lifejacket look. Lots of little bumps and big bumps in all sorts of places - sexy! Even more luckily, no photos have survived/been purchased! I'm not sure the rafting would've been as good if we weren't positioned right at the front of the raft which I'd kindly volunteered us for when the raft dude asked "who wants to get wet?" Needless to say my intervention was met by an equally stern and horrified look on Beth's face. Despite Beth's reservations and our poor track record in team paddling I can say without exaggeration that we were ace. Furthermore, when the raft dude asked if anyone wanted to swim alongside the raft in the refreshing rapids, Beth took me by utter surprise and launched herself overboard instantly. Then we all followed suit and were taken down the Shotover river for a bit of a ride.
We rounded off our action packed day by going for dinner with a couple of familiar friendly faces in the shape of newlyweds Rosie and Simon! After a great little Mexican (named Pedro - Ked!) we've worked out that we have quite similar itineraries so it might turn out that we turn into honeymoon hijackers and dog their every step...the least we could do after missing their wedding! Who says romance is dead?
