We had intended our stop-off in Surin to be a nice end to the NE of Thailand, we had hoped to include a visit to the "local" historical park for a warm-up to the Temples of Angkor in Cambodia. We took the train for a change, which turned out to be an excellent decision as we really enjoyed the journey through the rice paddies.
The town wasn't very easy on the eye and there was a very poor choice of hotels and no guesthouses. We ended up staying in the best of a bad bunch for a reasonable price, so it wasn't too bad.
The local temples were actually pretty far away, and would've taken the best part of a day travelling to and from the park. It was decided that we wouldn't bother, as no one had said that it was worth the pretty long and troublesome jorney! We therefore had quite a bit of time to kill in the town with nothing to do.
To add to our Surin-woes, the food was pretty poor there too, and not at all like the rest of Thailand. We had a green curry that was probably the best thing we ate. It nearly blew our heads off!
All in all, we were pretty relieved when the day came to move on to Cambodia.
