Not many people seem to bother visiting the tiny town of 1770, but having been told how cool it was we decided to stop and stay in the not much bigger town of Agnes Water next to it. We hopped in a minibus which took us round 1770 and had some lunch before deciding to try and walk back to our hostel. We were with 5 girls we knew, and somehow all got pretty lost looking for the beach, but found it in the end and made it back to our hostel. We stayed in Cool Bananas, which is one of the best hostels we've stayed in. It's really sociable and they serve enormous meals each night for just $5 - a backpacker's dream!
On Saturday the 7 of us set out to experience the real activities that draw people to 1770. First up was a surfing lesson, as it's one of the cheapest placces to do it. We had about 3 hours, and it was hilarious. It was really hard to catch a wave, and when we did it was near impossible to remember how to stand up. As Ben said, it's easy when you do it on the beach. In the end I was happy just to get to kneeling, and Ben did manage to stand a few times. We dashed back to the hostel to get changed and headed off to do Scooteroo, 1770's legendary scooter trip. You basically get either a regular scooter or a chopper style bike, and set off in convoy round the quiet country roads. Like many of the girls I was petrified at this prospect, but as promised by the biker dude in charge (complete with bandana and handlebar moustache) once we got going it was easy. There were about 50 of us altogether riding single file, and thanks to the position of the bike I was given myself and our friend Amy were right at the back. However, this proved to be a good thing as we could relax without the guys behind us...Ben was somewhere ahead with the speedier bikes! We stopped to see kangaroos and then again to watch the sunset before our three hour trip was over. It was fantastic fun and a great end to our adrenaline packed day! That night was Bangers n Mash at the hostel - delicious, despite the fact Australian sausages are made of beef - what's that all about?! Then we headed to the one pub in town for a drink before leaving the next morning for Hervey Bay.
