Well, this is it. The very last blog entry from me. We land at Manchester in less than an hour. The current temperature is -1 with snow on the ground. I was hoping our return would coincide with the start of spring. Not so.
It was this weekend three years ago that I moved in with Tony. It snowed then too. In fact it was a blizzard, roads were deserted, we couldn't get the removal van down my road, Tony had the flu and the van broke down. Ah, memories.
I guess it's quite fitting that exactly three years ago we were starting our adventure living together and here we are now, about to start 'normal' married life after an amazing 7.5 month adventure honeymoon.
I keep saying the adventure is over but I guess this is just the start of a lifetime of adventures together. The fact we have got on so well living in each other's pockets every day since finishing work on the 14th July last year suggests that our future should be bright!
As for the travelling, whilst in Singapore we met up with Owen who we did our Kili climb with. He's interested in heading to Nepal for some Everest trekking. Perhaps we will make it back one more time. After watching the film 'Everest' on the last flight, we are both definitely keen to be back looking at those absolutely sublime views.
There has also been talk of us heading back to South Africa at Christmas if the Sterling and Rand exchange rate stays as good as it has been.
Then again, we fancy a weekend in Berlin and I want to visit Iceland. Decisions, decisions.
Yesterday we counted up the countries we've been to in our lifetime. 43 for me and 44 for Tony. I feel inadequate! We've just spent over seven months travelling and yet there is still so much of the world left to experience.
I've absolutely loved the last seven and a half months and am really sad that it's over. I'll be glad to not have to be on the move all the time and lugging my rucksack, sleeping bag, drain pipe containing paintings and day sack with me, but I will miss arriving somewhere new and getting a feel for the culture and seeing the sights that excite me when I look through travel magazines or books. We've certainly ticked off quite a few of those sights throughout this trip!
Africa's tallest mountain- Kilimanjaro
Table Mountain
Victoria Falls
Everest Base Camp and Kalapather
Great Wall of China
Tiger Leaping Gorge
Terracotta Warriers
Seeing one of the worlds most endangered animals - The Panda
Seeing the temples of Bagan in Myanmar and travelling across Inle Lake and watching the unique way that the locals row and fish
Climbing up Indonesia's volcanos and seeing Borabadur at sunrise
Watching the alms procession in Luang Prabang, Laos... Even if it has become a circus.
Then there are so many more experiences that have been amazing which we didn't even know about when we set off on this trip. Three that come to mind are;
The worlds largest cave complex in Hang En, Vietnam
Driving through the Skeleton Coast in Namibia and witnessing it's stunning scenery
Exploring Dawei and its deserted beaches in Southern Myanmar
We looked through the latest Myanmar Lonely Planet and the Dawei Peninsula and it's collection of deserted beaches aren't even referenced. No wonder we saw few tourists and had entire undeveloped stretches of sand to ourselves.
I will miss walking in so many national parks and I've been missing the animals of Africa for some time given we left that continent four months ago. I'm already looking forward to being reunited with a tent and having a few camping trips over the summer!
Sometimes eating out all the time becomes a bore so I am looking forward to being able to cook for ourselves in our own kitchen. I think getting into the swing of cooking, cleaning, shopping and then in two weeks time getting up every day at 6am for work, will take some getting used to though.
I feel so privileged to have done what we have done and start our married life in this way.
Until the next extended travelling adventure, whenever that may be....
Leanne xx
Ps: We've just this second landed. Safe and sound we survived 21 flights. I don't feel as enthusiastic as I normally do when we land in a new country. No passport stamp either!
