There's no lack of dining options in the tourist driven towns of Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise in Banff National Park, Canada. Visitors can feast on just about anything you can think of - from traditional Korean to Canadian game and vegan fusion. But this only makes finding the real gems all the more difficult.
The Tavern, Banff
Excellent pizza with some creative combinations. My favourite is the Godfather - caramelized onions, prosciutto, tomato sauce base, kalamata olives and breadcrumbs. Top with honey and house made chili oil. The cocktails here are also good - the Berry Sangria is popular, and their Caesar's are the best in town. Tuesday night is $10 calzone night.
Sushi Bistro, Banff
Decently priced authentic Japanese sushi, run by a Japanese couple. Kamikaze rolls, avocado ngiri, miso soup and yam tempura plus loads of seafood.
St James Gate Irish Pub, Banff
Comfort food in the form of stuffed yorkies, stews, bangers and mash and a cold pint, of course. The servers are always friendly too.
Baker Creek Bistro, Lake Louise
On the Bow Valley Parkway out of town, this place does game food and Canadian cuisine well with its own flair. The duck poutine is truly divine and the Bison Ribs are another safe bet. Regular specials see Alaskan halibut and Elk on the menu too.
Skoki Lodge
You have to earn your stripes to eat in this backcountry lodge, 11km in the backcountry behind the Lake Louise Ski Resort. Indulge on succulent stuffed chicken and delicious deserts in the comfort of this cosy Canadian lodge.
Magpie & Stump, Banff
Having recently changed management, the food at this Mexican establishment has improved significantly. Freshly made guacamole and flavoursome tacos are the go here, and be sure to try a bulldog, the Stump's signature drink composing of a lime margarita with a corona dumped bottle and all in the jar.
