Woohoo, we are finally at our last stop of India and both so excited that were leaving. After another over night train journey we arrived to the most hectic place out of everywhere we have been. We got picked up from the hotel but had to walk about ten minuites down back alley ways to the hotel which looked awfull I was ready to punch the guy leading us, he walked so fast I actually thought I was going to pass out. The hotel was quite a nice suprise though inside. It was called Ganpati Guest house and was literally on the river bank of the Ganges, the views were amazing our room was huge, I mean it was no luxuary at all but the balcony surrounded the room and the room next door. We were so happy as it was full of travellers, the first we have seen since we have been here. We got talking to a couple and they advised us to take a boat trip down the river early in the evening. We had a really yummy tea of potato curry and chapatis. Were still not to sure about the meat it does not look apitising.
After we ate we walked on to see the famous Burning Ghat and oh my goodness what a shock. We knew it was a place were they burn bodies but we did not expect to see as many as we did. There were literally hundreds of bodies all on their own little fires burning away. A guy came upto us and showed us upto a building so we could see it properly. I have never been speachless before but was after this. The bodies get carried down to the river and dunked then they remove all the couloured material and place them on the wood and then set them on fire. On one you could see the feet and head burning away. Anyone reading this should look it up on google its just unbelievable.
The first night, what a joke. The room didnt have aircon but was all open as it had mesh windows so we thought it would be quite nice. Oh how we were wrong, we ended up having to move to another room which we thought would be better as there were no aircon rooms left. It was a nightmare. The fan did work but the welectric AAAHHHHHHH, its like someone just sits flicking a switch on and off all night, electric...no electric....electric....no electric, we ended up standing outside the room half the night with a torch because we literally couldnt breathe. We were both so angry.
The boat trip we did qwas quite good, it was 2 hours though and there is only so much riv er you can see so by the end we were so bored, half way round to make it more exciting we demoted the rower and did it ourselfs, much harder than you think but fun. At the end of the boat trip we pulled up to watch the ceremony, they do it every night and the streets is all lit up, the river is full of boats and floating candles but the ceromony, well what a load of racket ringing bells and banging drums, not to any kind of tune just horrible noise. It was funny because it was so bad.
As we think of what to write its always Karl pilkington and an idiot abroad that comes to mind as we really are not big fans of india, however were now ready to venture on our 2 days or travels to Bangkok.!
So Varanassi aiport, we arrived and it was closed??? I mean when have you ever seen an airport closed before. The first flight was 2 hours to Mumbai followed by and 8 hour wait in the airport. We had to pay 70 rupees to wait in this lounge other wise you can not enter the airport till 3 hours before. Stupid or what. The next flight was to Singapore that was 5 and a half hours. Singapore airport was amazing, we slept there for 6 hours as we had no money to eat. Luckily we managed to get a bottle of water with the 1 pound coin I had. Finally we boarded our flight to Bangkok.
See you there!!!
