Day 8 - Friday January 5, 2024 Puntarenas, Costa Rica
Arrival 09:30 All Aboard 15:30 Departure 16:00
Sailing into Puntarenas a huge vehicle carrier, Hercules Leader, is anchored off the coast.
The pilot arrived at 08:30 to bring us into port and we are at the dock by 09:30. The pier can accomodate two ships at a time. Today we are the only ship in port.
Leaving the ship we notice that many of tours have not left as the buses remain on the pier next to the ship.
I noticed a Lighthouse as we sailed into town so it is off in search of it by foot. Other than finding the lighthouse it was going to be a quiet day on board. These times are good as most of the passengers are off the ship on tours and we have the ship to ourselves.
Unfortunately or fortunately we passed a street bus vendor that was offering a drink called Churchill. It is a local drink in Costa Rica and is pure sugar. The ingredients include:
- Shaved Ice
- Powdered milk
- Sweented condensed milk
- Vanilla Ice cream
- Flavored syrup
- Fruit pieces including pineapple, grapes, apples
I do not know the calorie content but it was quite high. Janice and I shared it and she was quite happy to practice her spanish with the locals.
Tomorrow is another sea day as we make our way to Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala 472 nautical miles away.
During the sea days Janice is taking beginning bridge lessons. So should anyone want to play when we return Janice would be more than willing.

Edward Aldridge I hope the shaved ice didn't catch up with you! Ice is generally the overlooked downfall for people who can't handle the water.
Annne Nice to hear you’re motoring to warmer weather! A balmy -16C now and going down to the -20C something overnight and into the weekend, and snow., finally a bit of a snow storm. First for this winter!!! Looking forward to hearing more of your travels! Nice to enjoy a quieter day..
Shirley Grosser Thank you, Martin, for giving me the opportunity to catch up with you folks (so to speak). Always nice to have a whole ship to yourselves! And good for me to be reminded of the (few) places you’re going to, or have been, that I’ve enjoyed as well. Memories! I really appreciate your blogs. Hi to Janice. Thank you. ❤
