Ashley & Sarahs Adventures
Hi all, back on the mainland so can now leave you an update which we know you've all been waiting for. We have been on the "Yasawa Islands" for 3 weeks until yesterday, its a bit strange coming back to a world with t.vs and internet, which we really havent missed at all apart from Ash missing his Sky Sports News. We stayed at 9 different resorts throughout the Yasawas in 20 days, there was such variation in each place we wanted to see as much as possible. Haven't done an awful lot of activities, as its very "Fiji-Time" out there. If you think Ash is laid back you should meet a Fijian! We've met some really cool travellers and locals, we even got offered work at a place called Long Beach, we were the only tourists on the whole of the island for a few days! We got quite close to the family that worked there. Ash gave a 2 year old boy some bubbles, the lid was a bit loose so he warned his Dad because of the choking hazard to which he was thankful; next thing you know the dad hands the 2 year old Ronnie a machette to play with! We are going to be meeting up with some Auzzie friends in Sydney which we met and a family in Melbourne are taking us to lunch and maybe cooking Ash a nice pasty (which he misses almost as much as his footie). Most of our days have been spent swimming, kayaking and chilling in hammocks with cocktails. Ash has done four walks to the top of the islands which we have stayed on, some good photos there. The first resort we went to was called Nabua Lodge, we were warned that it was the most basic resort as its the island furthest from the mainland. We loved it! Within a day we were both used to the basic lifestyle, no electricity, sharing bathrooms, not the mention a few lizards which we named (look after yourself jeremy). We spent that evening eating around a huge table with everyone right on the beach underneath the stars, it was quite unreal. Our only real drama was going for a walk along Long Beach, the locals didn't warn us that 5 wild dogs guard a house at the end. They snuck up growling on us (mean rabie dogs) so we backed into the sea. When we slowly headed back to the resort they followed us and wouldn't stop jumping up at me & scratched my arm so I had to whack it around the head with my flip-flop, which worked a treat. Apart from that everythings been fab! Our favourite resort was "Oarsmans Bay Lodge" and "Octopus Resort" was a close second, if you can find them on the internet seeing as we can't send you pictures. Ash has also decided he isn't going to shave anymore. We are both looking quite travelled now and probably more tanned than we think. Before the Yasawas we were both quite concerned about the food which would be available, fortunately most places cater well for us both, Ash has even been spotted eating some melon for breakfast and fish & veg for tea!! Although I am quite sick now of omlette being veggie they don't have many options. So so far everything has gone extremely well! We're sitting here both trying to think of things which we haven't mentioned. At our last resort we took part in a Kava Ceremony. This is where you sit around on a lantern-lit rug with the other new arrivals in front of some tribal locals. You introduce yourself and the locals sing a few songs for you. Then you get passed a small bowl of Kava to drink (made from a root of something) which is a very traditional drink in Fiji. You have to drink this in one and theres a series of claps involved before and after. It tasted a bit weird, not as bad as others made out but it has a numbing effect on your mouth!
Thankyou everyone for all of your messages, theyre great to read when we can get online, please keep us dated with how you all are & whats new. We will probably get to an internet cafe in Melbourne, which we leave for tomorrow morning! Back to the swimming pool I think......
Take care everyone!!!!! Xxxxxxxxxxxxx
