Day 118 Wednesday 6th January 2010
Stacey says
We woke up at a painful 4am this morning, as we wanted to catch the sunrise at Captain Cooks Lighthouse, the most eastern point of Australia. It took a good 40 minute walk up to the point, it was pitch black, with no lights. Steve was scaring me suggesting that the woman who just walked past us doing her morning power walk was a ghost, as she told us directions and just disappeared so quickly! Haha! And you could hear all kinds of creeks and hissing noises from the bushes alongside the road. So finally reaching it in time for the 5.30 sunrise, it was very disappointing, lots of thick clouds in the sky, could only see patches of blue and orange in the gaps. Making it back for 7am, I had a quick snooze before jumping on the bus for 8.30am to head to Surfers Paradise. As we entered into the town, Steve described it as looking like Benidorm with lots of beach side high rise buildings. Checking in for midday, we had to have another snooze as we didn't sleep too well in the dorm last night. Then took a 30minute walk to the beach, it was a massive beach. We sat and watched the locals doing their evening surf, exercising or playing with their kids. We noticed lots of 'blueys' blue bottle jellyfish along the shore, these give a real sting if their tail wraps around you so we hear! We walked along for about half an hour, before walking upto the main street, and stopping in a café for a bite to eat. After resting here for about an hour, we then took a bus back to the hostel. It was definitely a very quick visit to Surfers Paradise only staying here tonight!
