Day 164 Thursday 18th February 2010
Johno says
Today we transferred to Christchurch through the foothills of the Southern Alps, it was a miserable day so we didn't have many stops on the way. Then we made it through the flat Canterbury plains which is a total contrast to the hills and mountains that we have been seeing for the past week or so. The coach driver was asking questions to the passengers and I suggested she asked 'how many muscles a cat has in its ear?' it was all going well until some fella answered 32 almost straight away - it appears that he also spotted the list of useless facts on the wall of the previous hostel toilets dammit! We arrived in Christchurch for around 1pm and set about some domestic duties, then we met up with the Northampton guys for a couple of beers which turned into quite a few by the end of the evening.
Day 165/166 Friday 19th February 2010/Saturday 20th February 2010

Both fairly easy going days, winding down from the last four weeks of touring around NZ. We just wondered around Christchurch, taking snaps of this very much English looking town, with trams and lots of buses and its many gardens dotted around. It has been the least hilly place we have been to in New Zealand! The Cathedral Square was a nice spot, it had a vibrant and buzzing atmosphere with a little handicrafts market, big rugby screen in the centre, lifesize chess board, buskers, and some token preachers. It's hard how to dress in this city, the wind is chilly, and makes the shade feel even more cold, stand in the sun and you can feel yourself burning and taking back off the layers!. It was a nice place to finish our time in New Zealand.
