Jonny's South American Adventure!
On Thursday we flew down to El Calafate, which is in the Patagonia area of Argentina. Having to wake Stef up at 6 in the morning to say goodbye was flippin' hard. We had one of those awkward goodbyes, before I walked across Av. 9 for the final time in the early morning sunshine, with a slight tear in my eye (there's my feminine side for you!), to meet the rest of them at the hostel and get a cab to the airport.
Thursday was then spent just getting our bearings and organising our day trip on Friday to the Moreno Glacier. And what a trip it was! The five of us hired a car for the day and drove ourselves to the national park where the glacier is, about 80km away. Doing it as a fivesome meant the split cost of the car was cheaper than doing it as part of an organised tour, something we hope to repeat for other trips. I have probably used the word amazing too often in my journals, but here it is absolutely appropriate. Seeing chunks of ice breaking of the 60m high glacier that extends for as far as the eye can see truely was awe inspiring, even if I was a tad cold! It really was a spectacular sight that must surely rank up there amongst the best in the world.
Saturday was actually a really good day without us actually doing much! After having breakfast I nipped on the net to find that Chelsea had drawn, and then quickly realised that it was approaching 11am so United would soon be kicking off. So Lex (a fellow red) and myself ran into town to try and find a place showing the game, finally coming across one at about 11:15. Needless to say I was as animated as ever in my support, waking a quiet little town from its start of the weekend slumber when Saha equalised! So all was going well until 5 minutes into the second half, the fridge behind the bar blows a fuse, which in turn knocks out both televisions! It soon became clear that non of the workers had any inclination whatsoever to fix the problem, and we didn't have a clue what the Spanish for "come on what the **** are you playing at, don't you realise what a big game this is?" was, so we promptly left and frantically started wandering the streets again looking for another place. After a good 20 minutes we were almost giving up until Lex popped his head in a place that I was adamant was closed since it just looked like a snooker club with not a soul to be seen, only for it to be open and we asked the woman to turn on the big TV to Fox Sports. Literally, 5 minutes later Ruud scored the winner and the two of us were jumping around wildly, with nobody else in this place whatsoever, and this poor woman staring at us wondering what the hell was going on! The best thing was we had absolutely no change on us at all, and we hadn't actually bought anything in this place, so all we could do at the final whistle was run up to her, give her a kiss and say muchas gracias as many times as possible! Walking home I was absolutely buzzing, and I just began to wonder if some things are meant to be.........
The rest of the day was then just spent wandering the quirky, if expensive, town and doing a bit of window shopping, before we headed back to the hostel to prepare for the monster 33 hour bus journey to our next destination. All would not go to plan though........
