Monday 6th April 2009 - met up with scouser Paul from the Great Ocean Road tour and went sightseeing today which took about 2 hours in total, ha ha, this is Adelaide. We went to the museum of South Australia which was actually really cool, took in all the old monumental buildings of the North Terrace, then went and had lunch in trendy Rundle Mall street. We then made the unanimous decision to go for a drink, so we found a bar that did my favourite drink Bison vodka, and we settled there for a while as inevitably 1 drink turned into several and we cleaned them out of Bison vodka. Our tour guide Todd then called me and joined us, and vodka ended up turning into red wine. Dangerous, but bloody good night!!
Tuesday 7th April - up early to get to the port suburb of Glenelg where I got on the Temptation Sailing trip to see wild bottlenose dolphins. I was feeling slightly spaced from last nights red wine, but its my own fault. It was bloody freezing as well as its autumn over here now, and being in a wetsuit on a cloudy morning was not cosy, but we went out and there were pods of wild dolphins. They pride themselves on not feeding or overinteracting with these dolphins, so they just come and swim with us out of their own curiosity, not because they are getting fed. They threw lines out and we went in and held onto the lines and got gently dragged along behind the boat with snorkelling gear on. The visiblity under the water was pretty s***, so none of us saw the dolphins under water, but we got our heads out, and there they were in their pods just cruising quite happily alongside us, in and out of the water and all around us and below us. It takes your breath away to be so close in the water with them, and you can hear their echoing noises under water. This happened several times, they would swim off and we'd find more and get in the sea again and swim alongside them quite happily. After a while I decided I was going to freeze my arse off if I stayed in that wetsuit, so I got out and changed along with a German girl, and we sat catching the suns rays which eventually decided to come out on top of the boat nattering away, then a big pod of about 7 dolphins came up. They came right up to the boat and the view was crystal clear and they were playing around us for ages, and they had a baby which was so small and adorable. The calves are born in February, so this baby was 2 months old, and the skipper was telling me that when they are first born its hilarious to watch them swim as they haven't got used to their breathing, so they jump right out to get air and then belly flop back in the water. It was just incredible to see them so close, and they were chattering away noisily. The view is completly different on the boat to being in the water swimming alongside them, but equally fantastic. It was so cool.
