Around the world with Annie
HI guys. No i have not been kidnapped by guerallas or held to ransom. I have been having the best time of my life. I have travelled through mexico and belize and i am now in guatemala.
Here is a brief of what i have been up to..the edited version. I am being helped by pattie who is typing this ¿hi guys? because i am crap at typing. By the way this is our second attempt.
MEXICO
CANCUN=Accomodation was good. Had aircon. Food was excellent nice and spicy. Cancun itself was unispiring with lots of hotel strips and beaches and little else. To be fair i was only there for 13hours but that was more than enough for me.
PLAYA DE CARMEN=Tourist spot but beautiful and hot. Visited Tulum the mayan ruins situated above a beach. It was once called City of the Dawn. A breathtaking setting and surreal. Also went on a snorkelling and fishing trip but caught no fish and got caught in a storm. The snorkelling was fantastic. The sea was the warmest i have ever swam in.
BELIZE
CAYE CAULKER=We used local transport. Busses, taxis and water taxis. Had an eventful time crossing the boarder. Our guide and another group memeber were denied entry. After a few hours everything was sorted. A warm welcome into corrupt authorites. BElize city is a small bussling community. A water taxi got us to caye caulker 1 hour. The island has a caribbean atmosphere and has a great diving spot. Went on a snorkelling trip and pattie taught me how to free dive. Not very good yet but not bad for a first attempt. Swam with stingrays and nurse sharks. Loved it, lived it and would do it again.
SAN IGNACIO=Jungle setting subtropical. Stayed in huts with lots of insect life. Scorpins. crickets, spiders, tranculas, and of course snakes too. We went tubing along the river had lots of fun in the rapids. Perhaps the highlight so far was visiting Actun Tunichil Muknal ¿ATM?. A cave system used by the mayan to do rituals and sacrifices. We hiked 45mins in the jungle to reach the cave entrance from there on we swam and waded through the tunnels. There were bones and pots dating back from 700=900AD. The rock formations were spectacular. The cave was only opened in 1988. Our guide was very informative. Check out pictures when i get them downloaded.
GUATEMALA
What a beautiful country with beautiful people. It is hard to think that it had had a violent recent past.
FLORES=Colourful town on a small island on the lake Peten Itza. Visited Tikal the mayan ruins and the most impressive in the americas. Up at 4am to watch the mist of the jungle reveal the ruins with the chorus of the howling monkeys. Very atmospheric. Tikals ruins cover an area of 30sqkms. The mayan were successful in agriculture, irrigation, litracy, culture and warfare. The city supported a population of 100,000. There was so much wildlife. We saw many toucans and parrots and monkeys...
That is it for now..time for a beer...it is a tough life travelling. I cant love it enough..love to you all
