Anna in Europe
We decided to take a day trip to Bratislava as it's only 2 1/2 hours away from Budapest. We got the train from Keleti Pu (8100Ft for the two of us).
We walked from the Bratislava Hl. St. (main station) to the old part of town, stopping at the Presidantial Palace on the way. In the old town we saw most of the sights...Michael's Gate Tower, the castle, a couple of beautiful squares, primatial palace and other interesting buildings. The castle is on top of a hill, where you can see across the whole city.
The city centre looks like it has recently been cleaned up and some of the squares have been redone. It seems very tourist friendly - most of the people we saw were tourists - a lot has been done to attract them. It is a city with a lot of character and we were pleasantly surprised as we didn't expect there would be much to do there as it is so small!
We took a bus from Novy Most (New Bridge) to Devin castle, about 20mins away. Devin castle is situated right by the Austrian border and was an once important stronghold. Now it's pretty runined, but what's left of it is quite impressive. There are a couple of little museum exhibitions within parts of the castle. You get great views on the Danube and Morova rivers from the top.
Then we headed back to Bratislava for some dinner followed by a mad dash back to the station to catch the last train back to Budapest.
