We head south to Te Anau in the Fiordlands for glow worms. Te Anau is overcast and drizzle but as the Fiordlands get 6-7 meters of rain each year what can you expect! We are ferried over lake Te Anau and although there is low cloud the scenery is still very pretty with surrounding mountains to the south west covered in rainforest. The weather adds a moody, erie setting to the lake. At the caves visitor centre we warm ourselves with tea and coffee and learn about glow worms and the surrounding area. We then head into the caves in groups of 12 slowly making our way up into the mountian admiring underground streams and water falls. There is minimal light as this puts off the glow worms. We get into a small boat that the guide moves by pulling on a chain. The glow worms make the ceiling of the cave look like a starry night. The hungrier a glow worm the brighter their glow. It was very relaxing.
That night we camp just north of Te Anau close to where several scenes of The Lord of the rings were filmed. It's an idylic camp site within a wood with lots moss and a lake. Heading north we go via Queenstown and get more of Aggies fsh & chups as we are passing and make our way to the Franz Josef glacier on the west coast. It's very wet for most of the journey and so on arriving at Franz Josef where it is still raining hard we book into a hostel and have a cosy night in on the sofa watching a film (Twilight is on).
