Anna & Kerry's South America Travels
Hey guys,
Know this entry is about a week late, but we stayed for a few days where there was only really slow internet and then went on a tour in the middle of no where so havent had a chance to add anything for a while!!
Anyway, we arrived in La Paz in the afternoon, after crossing the border from Peru. Had a bit of a blonde moment, as we had to a transfer in Copacabana (just on the Bolivian border) and they said the bus to La Paz left at 1pm. We arrived at about half 11 so decided to go for a wander and get some lunch. had pancakes yum!! It was a really nice little town and we kind of wished we were staying a couple of days, as it was right on the lake so had a kind of beachy feel to it. Anyway we arrived back at the bus stop about quarter to 1, and the lady came running over to us in panic saying something about 2 o'clock. Oh dear!! Just sunk in that Boliva is an hour ahead of Peru, and we are nearly an hour late for the bus. Luckily it had waited for us (theyre always late anyway) Was really embaressing though as everyone was glaring at us!! Anyway finally arrived in La Paz, part of the way was on a boat!! Were dropped off outside Hotel Milton, so decided we might as well stay there.
The hotel was the poshest we have stayed in so far, and we were on the top floor so had an amazing view of the city and the mountains behind. And there was an elevator so we didnt have to walk up miles of stairs!! Spent the first evening just wandering around the city and got some dinner.
The next day we got a taxi to the Plaza Estudiante and booked our mountain biking trip with Gravity Assisted Mountain Biking. And guess what was just over the road?? Burger King!! Both had large meals and a hershey pie!! After lunch we had a wander around the witches market - lots of weird stuff like dead llama fetuses, stuffed frogs, dead armadillos etc. Bought these little jars that are supposed to be for good luck. Also did a bit of souvenir shopping and visited the book exchange.
Arrggh the next day was the day we cycled down the worlds most dangerous road. Got up quite early and made out way to the cafe where we were meeting everyone. Had some really good pancakes for breakfast - even got maple syrup! Left there about 7.45 and made our way in the bus up to the top of the mountain. Had to pass through a check point where the vehcile has a safety check and a list is handed in with our names on (to notify the families if the bus goes over the edge9 Oh God I thought what the hell are we doing! Anyway once we were at the top of the mountain we were each given our equipment and bikes and had a quick ride around to get aquainted with the bikes. Then we set off down the mountain. This part of the road was paved, so was the easiest part, but I still had my brakes on full and thought I was going way too fast. We cycled down this for about an hour or so, then stopped and were told we were now approaching the gravel section, and the worlds most dangerous road. The guide explained what we shoudl do if there was a vehicle approaching, and which side of the bike we should dismount etc. he also told us some stories of people who hadnt followed instructions and had gone off the edge. It was really not encouraging me and I was starting to get in a bit of a panic. Statistically it is more dangerous to go down the hill in a vehicle so I thought i would be better off riding. the bad thing was that traffic here drove on the left hand side, which just happened to be the side at the edge of the mountain with a 400 m drop in places. I was so scared and were pressing the brakes so hard that my hands were going white. We were at the back of the group the whole way, as everyone else seemed to be experienced mountain bikers!! Anyway managed to survive and after going under waterfalls and through 2 rivers we arrived at the bottom where we were greeting with a coke or beer. From here we drove up to Hotel Esmerelda, where we got a much needed shower and a buffet lunch. The view here was amazing - you could see the road below and the forested mountains. Was really sunny and there was a pool so we wished we were staying. Anyway about 5 we left the hotel and drove back along the worlds most dangerous road. Was really scary when we met another vehicle, but luckily we always had the right of way so it was them that ad to reverse. Apparently something like 26 vehicles go over the edge each year. It soon got dark, and we couldnt really see where we were going. But arrived safely back in La Paz at 9. Werent that hungry so just went straight to bed!
The next day we just had another wander, and went back to Burger King where we met up with Irene and Mette (from the Inca trek) Spent the rest of the day with them in cafes chatting and catching up. Then after much confusion of where it left from we got the bus to Uyuni. Were given dinner as soon as we got on but it was cold!! The bus was fairly nice, but no where near as good value as the Ormeno buses in Peru!
Ps forgot to mention our kitten that we named Zappal, who wandered into our hotel room and was soooo cute!!!
