The journey from Siem Reap took 11 hours in total, mainly due to waiting 3 hours for a bus to Bangkok at the border. I seemed to make an impression on the Thai immigration official, who gave me two bananas whilst stamping my passport - apparently for my very good Thai accent?!
Our first night in Bangkok was in a budget hotel near to our usual spot in Bangkok. We had our last Pad Thai from the street. Dave also got a hair cut whilst I had a pedicure. The next day we checked out and got a taxi over to Lebua @ State Tower, a 5* hotel in Bangkok as featured at the end of the Hangover 2. We wanted to have a bit of luxury over our last couple of days to finish our trip off in style and soften the blow of coming back to reality! And wow, did we do just that! When we got there, we were informed we would get an upgrade to a suite on the 55th floor (our smart clothes at check in had paid off!) Our room was huge and the service impeccable. And wow, the view from our room over Bangkok and the Chaophraya river was just amazing!!
We immediately went down to chill by the pool and enjoy the last rays of the day, we didn't have long left to top up our tans! As it was a really clear day (an unusual thing in Bangkok) we decided to head up to the Sky Bar on the 64th floor for drinks whilst watching the sunset. The bar had the real 'wow' factor and we enjoyed sipping our drinks whilst taking in the views. We then headed to McDonalds as that was the only thing we fancied, since we were still recovering from our food poisoning in Cambodia - I reckon we're the only people who can go from the Sky Bar to McDonalds in one night!
The next day we headed to Siam Paragon and the MBK centre to do some shopping… It was a productive day and we headed back to the hotel, to enjoy the huge room as much as possible. In the evenings, we enjoyed drinking beers in our lounge, listening to our tunes and playing gin rummy - good times J It was then with a heavy heart that we had to leave to get our flight to the UK!
We definitely saw a totally different side to Bangkok than we had before… The staff at the hotel made you feel like a million dollars opening doors for you and sorting out taxis - things we were used to doing ourselves, but it was nice not to have to worry about those things for once! We are so glad we decided to splash out on a 5* hotel for our last couple of nights and it's definitely finished the trip off in style!
