Things I have learned while travelling (part 2):-
10. A 'jungle lodge' is not as grand as it sounds.
11. My expectations of plumbing and hygeine in accomodation have dropped dramatically.
12. If the advertised length of the bus journey is 3 hours, this means it will take 4 and a half hours. If it is 5, then expect 7 hours, and so on.
13. Choice of music on a long, solo bus journey through incredible scenery is cruical. DO NOT listen to anything emotional or thoughtful as this may have disasterous consequences. In case of emergency, listen to podcasts by Ricky Gervais or Adam & Joe or in desperate circumstances the Bugsy Malone Soundtrack. It will be impossible to be miserable.
14. Arriving at 10:30pm in a town you don't know without a hotel booking is actually OK.
15. Just because you got 50 ant bites one night and are now smothered in Deet and covered up from head to toe, does not mean you will not proceed to be bitten another 50 times the next night.
16. When in a town, famished and looking for a restaurant/cafe/anywhere selling food, you will find that you have inexplicably wandered into the hardware/religious artifacts/cake decorating district and can't find your way out. When you do, for whatever reason, require a bag of nails/statue of the virgin Mary/cutesy puppy dog cake ornament, you will be unable to find them.
17. Fruit is actually quite nice. Except for papaya, that's horrible.
