In my Easter Break in the beginning of April, my Dutch friends and I spent 10 stunning days with two Wicked (yes, wicked!) camper vans, driving almost 2000 kilometers from Perth up to world heritage Shark Bay and Monkey Mia and back. It was my first time camping and after an initial settling-in period, I enjoyed our adventure in the (almost) Australian outback. Moreover, it was my first time driving on the left side with the shift stick also being on the left :D It was unusual in the beginning, however we all quickly adapted to it and then it became normal quite quickly for all of us. Truly an experience though!
Western Australia is not yet that touristy as the East Coast apparently, even though its nature and wildlife is just amazing!!
On our trip, major destinations were the famous limestone formations, the Pinnacles; the Hamelin Pool Stromatolites - layered microogranism rock structures in shallow water, so 'living fossils'; Shell Beach - a beach only consisting of white shells; the 'independent' providence of Hutt River for which we also got a passport stamp; Monkey Mia, where we got to see wild dolphins who come by the beach and get fed in the shallow water; Shark Bay, where we also saw wild dolphins, sharks and stingrays. Durings these days, we always had to drive a few hours, also cook and eat of course and find a spot for spending the night at. Oftentimes, we camped on campsites with showers and toilets, but once, we also got to spend a night at the beach while seeing the most amazing sky (and the Milkyway) and falling asleep to the sounds of the waves.
During the whole trip, I was super paranoid to encounter wild and dangerous animals such as spiders, scorpios or snakes. While being at the beach for example, we spotted a bunch of round holes in the sand which we predicted to be from snakes. Eventually, as soon as it got dark, those holes turned out to be the shelter of big crabs, so I was pretty relieved :)
On our way back, we once stopped by a super remote farmstay which initially looked like in a scary movie, however, it turned out to be run by a farmer's employee/housekeeper who offered us not only a place to camp at night, but also hot showers and bathroom facilities, as well as cooking facilities. We prepared a very delicious dinner and later, we were joined by the employee who would tell us personal stories about living in Australia and about the wild animals I was so afraid of ;) it was a great, unexpected evening full of stories, laughter and wine.
Back in Perth, we spend 2 days exploring (and shopping) in the city, as well as partying and visiting the island of Freemantle. I really enjoyed being in Perth, also because the city had a lot to offer.
All in all, this is only the super short version of these amazing 10 days I've spent at the West Coast; of course, there was still a lot more to explore, but the distances shouldnt be underestimated, so seeing even more places along the coast was just not feasible.
