Okay, it's been a while since we've written in this beacause we've been moving around a fair bit.
From Rio we headed to Saquarema, Brazil's surf capital. We stayed at a small house with a few other travellers. The weather was rubbish for the first few days so we caught up on some sleep and reading. When the sun came out we hit the beach and could see why surfers flock here. The waves were about 10-12ft and seriously impressive to watch the locals do it. Phil and Russ had a go but sturggled to even get out to the lineup!
The town was a small fishing village andthe boys made the most of the fishing rods at the hostel and bought some gear to see what they could catch. They managed to catch a few small fish, but were more impressed when a penguin swam up to them and stood next to them whilst they were fishing!
Everyone was really friendly. Whilst eating at a local burger bar, a local man offered us to stay and party with him and his friends and to share the fish which he had caught that day...not the type of thing you'd get in England!
After a few days here, we headed to Arraial do Cabo, a few hours up the coast. We stayed in a really cute little hostel within 10 minute' walk of 3 beaches. We did a boat trip here on a big schooner which took us on a tour of the beaches and the nearby islands, renowned for their dive spots and scenery. We were also tempted by the free bar! When in the bays, we were able to jump off the front of the boat in to the sea.
After a few days by the beach we headed another few hours up the coast to Buzios. This is the "St Tropez" of Brazil and was apparently 'discovered' by Bridgette Bardot when she was holidaying in her prime! The peninsula has around 22 beaches, all different from one another. Some for surfing, some for swimming, snorkelling, windsurfing and a nudist one for good measure. The hostel we stayed in was absolutely awesome. It was brand new and had a huge widescreen tv and a wii to entertain us in the evenings. We met a cool group of people and had a few fun nights with barbecues and drinks. During the Man Utd - Wigan match the group played the centurion drinking game - drinking a shot of beer every minute. Needless to say it ended quite messily but was lots of fun.
The resort itself was lovely. It is far more upmarket than anywhere else we've been to (people actually dress up for dinner!) and had a great feel about it. Could definitely come back here for a 2 week holiday!
This is as high up the coast as we'll be travelling. There is so much more of Brazil to see but we have done so much travelling already that we are loving the shorter journeys. It's also pretty hard to find a reason to leave when the places have all been so wonderful around here.
Heading to Paraty again next before heading to Ilha Grande.
