There was no call to notify us of the Aurora Borealis last night, the lodge has an arrangement where if it is visible they call the room, with a wakeup call (if you ask them to), we thought this was a great idea as if we are going to see it, it would be between 1am and 3am.
So the morning started in a relaxed fashion, we caught the bus from the lodge to Talkeetna at 9.30am for a Wilderness Jet Boat along the glacial fed Susitna River, there was a stop alongside the river to see how trappers lived - so we saw the authentic trappers cabin, the traps, how food was kept fresh, and all the different furs. On the tour we did see the protected Bald Eagle, they mostly nest by the rivers to be close to the salmon spawning as they feast on fish, then in the winter they move on, returning in the summer to the same place. We saw a nest also, their nests, can be up to six feet wide, atop tall cottonwoods.
Lunch was at West Rib Pub and Grill, this is where we decided to try the fish from the area, apparently the cleanest, most pristine waters in the world. The pub helps with those that can't decide so they have a mixed grill of fish. This is where we tried the fresh Halibut (sweet, white firm meat) and Chum Salmon.
Thereafter, we had a relaxed afternoon at the lodge, sitting by the fire, catching up on emails, blogging and writing postcards.
We booked ourselves at the Al Carte Restaurant that night, where we couldn’t pass the Seafood Chowder, Salmon Spring Rolls and King Crab Au Gratin. Mum chose a vegetable stack which was perfect for her and a real treat.
At 9pm we joined others at the Photo Symphony Theatre – for the Aurora - The Crown of Light - big screen presentation, a magical panoramic display of Alaskan imagery set to classical music, to help us with what the Aurora Borealis would look like and how it all happens, if we did get the chance to see it.
