My name is Doug Harder and this is my tenth year overseas. I have taught at four other international schools, Kuwait, South Korea, Japan and most recently in Taiwan. I move in August to Shanghai, China to teach Middle/High school art at Concordia International School Shanghai. I am originally from Washington State. My first degree was a B.A. in Fine Arts from Washington State University, preceded by an Education degree from Eastern Washington University. The Anglo-American School is an IB school, so PYP is integrated into all the subjects in the Elementary. I teach Pre-Kindergarten through Third Grade the Principles of Design: Line, Shape, Color, Value, Form, Texture and Space. My feeling is that the process of creating art is more important that the product. If the student knows the steps in how to make art, they can apply that to more complex subjects.
Having attended international schools as a child in the Philippines and Taiwan, I understand what it is like to be a third culture Kid! This knowledge helps me empathize with my students in how to make the most out of being in an international community.
