The sign has had quite a history. It used to read "Hollywood Land" but "Land" was destroyed by a landslip and not replaced. In the early days it was vandalised, changed (to read "Hollyweed") and was used by some people to commit suicide (the letters stand 55ft high). The sign is now fenced and guarded to prevent access.
