Weather: Warm to Hot, 32C Night – 38C Day
I don't know what I expected of Texas. Oil wells! Well there’s plenty of those. In the West of Texas all you can smell is oil. It’s in the air, just like when you spill some oil when doing an oil change.
Like they say Texas is big. One thing you don’t so often hear is that it’s tropical. Today we woke to 32C and 85% humidity. And from there it just got hotter. It’s as humid as anything I experienced teaching in the Gulf at Doomadgee in Queensland over the wet season. Sitting here typing this at 9pm the perspiration is dripping of me. Gael is in the State Park shower block where we are staying. The showers are air conditioned here. I think she will spend the night in there.
We entered Louisiana tonight and struggled to find a camp site for the first time. All down the West side of the US there was a Visitors Centre on every corner. Since entering Texas there have seen b***** all! So finding out info on National and State Parks, etc, is a real problem for planning the day’s drive. Haven’t seen another tourist for days. We are even a bigger novelty value out this way.
There doesn’t appear to be the natural attractions through this part of the country. I guess we got spoilt in the West. It must be said however that the country is still beautiful, but farmland/rangeland in the main. Will probably reach Mississippi tomorrow (17th I think). The Appalachian Mountains start in northern Alabama. From then on we will be in 'Deliverance’ country. Some of you may remember the fat guy on all fours and squealing. I’m starting to sweat more just thinking about it!!!!
We have decided not to go further south this time of the year. We are hoping that the weather may be less humid as we move further north away from the Gulf of Mexico and reach Alabama.
