St Maartin is a tiny island! We rented an old-school Wrangler Jeep to explore(which made Jon very happy!) Half of the island is Dutch and half is French! It has two different accents, two currencies and different architecture styles! I heard that a Dutch and a French explorer walked off in opposite directions around the island and where they met again was where they drew the border! I like that story - much more peaceful than the history of other colonial islands!
St Phillipsburg is really developed; everywhere you look there are dutyfree shops. We headed for the hills! We found gorgeous coves, beautiful, rugged countryside and amazing views...
Our two favourtie places were Loterie Farm, where you get surrounded by butterflies, and Pic du Paradis for it´s amazing scenery. The roads to Pic du Paradis are bumpy, in poor condition and isolated! We had a scary moment when the jeep completely stuck in a ditch on the steep deserted mountain trail! But, after puffing and panting, we were saved by 4x4!
